OUROBOROS
My work depicts elements of the human condition that we grapple with, moments that we cling onto in our subconscious but cannot settle on. The figures in my paintings are resigned in their eternal struggle, forever shucking, splitting, shedding, bending, and breaking themselves. The works are empathetic in that they not only allow me to record, but to define; they allow me to translate, discover, and understand aspects of myself and others.
The creation of these works not only allows me to document and express internal conflict, but to grow and move on from it. Humans generally fear impermanence; we are forever documenting ourselves and cling onto evidence of our existence with desperation. I attempt to show the concept of impermanence in my works, exploring fluid states of being in an undeniably static manner. We often forget the blessings that come with mortality; while my paintings are a permanent portrayal of this fear, we are capable of change. In this way, the pieces are absurd and contradictory, an expression of mortality and the fleeting that will not fade.
I eat my stomach and spit it back up, feeling hunger extend through my muscles, into the marrow of my bones. I will eventually stop chewing and choose to rest.
But tonight I devour myself.
